Why would I want a dental implant?

A dental implant is one of the most effective ways to replace a missing tooth.

A single implant consists of a small titanium post that is placed into the jawbone and acts as a replacement tooth root. Once healed, it supports a custom-made crown that looks and functions like a natural tooth.

Unlike removable dentures or "plates", dental implants are fixed in place, allowing you to eat, speak and smile with confidence. They also help preserve the surrounding bone and avoid placing unnecessary strain on neighbouring teeth, as can sometimes happen with traditional dental bridges.

Why would I need more than one implant?

 The number of implants needed depends on how many teeth are missing and where they are located.

If two teeth are missing, two implants will often provide the strongest and most predictable long-term result.

If three teeth are missing together, it is often possible to place two implants and support a bridge of three teeth between them. This can provide an excellent balance between strength, function and cost.

For patients who have lost most or all of their teeth, multiple implants can be used to support a full set of fixed replacement teeth. Unlike traditional dentures, these teeth do not move around, rub against the gums or affect confidence when eating and speaking. They look, feel and function much more like natural teeth.

 At Tupsley Dental Practice we exclusively use Southern Implants.

While many implant systems are available, we have chosen Southern Implants because they offer innovative designs that help us achieve predictable, long-lasting results while often reducing the need for additional surgery.

Whenever possible, we aim to preserve the natural bone and gum tissues around a missing tooth. Southern Implants offer implant designs that can often be placed immediately after tooth extraction, helping maintain the natural shape of the gums and supporting a highly aesthetic result.

Less need for bone grafting

 Southern Implants developed the innovative Co-Axis® implant system, which allows us to make better use of the bone that is already present. In many cases this can reduce, or even eliminate, the need for additional bone grafting procedures.

This is particularly beneficial when replacing front teeth, where achieving a natural appearance is extremely important.

Is dental implant treatment painful?

 No. Dental implant treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, and there should be no pain during the procedure itself.

We take great care to ensure you remain comfortable throughout treatment. If you feel anything at all, additional anaesthetic can be given immediately.

Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the procedure is and often report that it was easier than they expected.

After treatment, some mild soreness or swelling is normal and is usually well controlled with the pain relief medication we provide at your pre-operative appointment. This means you have everything you need before the day of treatment arrives.

Do you offer sedation for implant treatment?

 Yes. For patients who feel nervous about dental treatment, intravenous (IV) conscious sedation is available.

Sedation is provided by Carolyn from Sedation UK, an experienced and fully qualified sedation practitioner. Conscious sedation helps you feel deeply relaxed throughout treatment while remaining able to respond to instructions.

All members of our implant team are trained in Immediate Life Support and hold the relevant qualifications required for implant dentistry.
