Guided Biofilm Therapy
GBT – What You Need to Know
We now have two new machines in the Hygiene suites from EMS “Electro Medical Systems”.
EMS is a Swiss company known for its dental technologies, particularly in the area of oral hygiene and prophylaxis.
These are state of the art machines used for Dental Hygiene and we are introducing the new protocol to all our hygiene patients where possible. This protocol is called Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)
Some of you may remember we were trialling a new machine with Airflow in the hygiene clinics last year. GBT utilizes specific technologies like Airflow and Piezon to achieve a minimally invasive and comfortable cleaning experience. This results in a much gentler, but also more efficient treatment to clean your teeth and disrupt bacteria that causes tooth decay.
Our hygienists will be more than happy to explain more to you and show you the benefits of this new protocol when you come in for your next hygiene appointment. They have been super keen to have this technology for some time as we believe it really is the best care we can offer.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
- Biofilm:
Biofilm is a complex community of microorganisms that adhere to surfaces, like teeth and gums. In the mouth, it's commonly known as dental plaque.
- GBT's approach:
Guided Biofilm Therapy aims to manage and remove biofilm using a systematic, evidence-based protocol.
- Key technologies:
-
- Airflow: Uses a controlled jet of warm water, air, and fine powder to remove biofilm, stains, and early calculus.
-
- Piezon: Employs warm water and pain-free technology to remove deposits from the teeth.
-
- Perioflow: A specialized nozzle used for cleaning deeper in the gum pockets.
- Benefits:
-
- Minimally invasive: GBT uses less abrasive instruments, making it a more comfortable experience, especially for those with sensitive teeth or dental restorations.
-
- Effective: GBT is highly effective in removing biofilm and reducing the risk of gum disease and tooth decay.
-
- Suitable for various patients: GBT can be used on natural teeth, restorations like crowns and veneers, braces, and dental implants.
-
- Reduces anxiety: The gentle nature of GBT can be particularly beneficial for patients who experience anxiety during traditional dental cleanings.
- GBT vs. Traditional Hygiene:
Guided Biofilm Therapy represents a shift from traditional scaling and polishing methods, offering a more comfortable and potentially more effective approach to oral hygiene.
Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is generally safe for most patients, but certain conditions can make it unsuitable or require adjustments. Contraindications include respiratory illnesses like asthma or bronchitis, severe periodontal disease, allergies to erythritol or chlorhexidine, and pregnancy or breastfeeding. Additionally, patients with active infections, certain medical conditions requiring antibiotic prophylaxis, or those who cannot consent to treatment may not be suitable for GBT.
